Varicose Veins

Vein Disorders

Many people inherit vein disorders. The incidence is higher in women than men. In the United States, nearly 50 percent of the adult population suffers from painful and unsightly vein diseases. The most common forms are spider and varicose veins.

Spider veins are small blue or red vessels visible within the skin, usually on the leg, face, neck or chest. Varicose veins are dilated and ropy appearing blue vessels visible under the skin, often a ¼ inch or larger in diameter. Varicose veins typically cause pain, fatigue and swelling - and sometimes even more serious complications.

The ELAS Procedure - a Gentle, Safe & Effective Treatment Alternative for Varicose Veins

Until recently, the removal of varicose veins required the actual stripping of the vein - a surgical procedure that requires an overnight hospital stay, a painful recovery period - and possible scarring from incisions and post-operative infections.

The FDA-cleared Endoluminal Laser Ablation of the Saphenous Vein (ELAS) procedure may sound complicated - but it's actually a very quick, one-time, minimally invasive therapy, which causes little or no side effects and has shown to be highly effective in eliminating varicose veins.

During the 45-minute procedure, the involved area of your leg is anesthetized and a thin laser fiber is placed into the affected vein. Your physician will then deliver laser energy via the fiber to damage and eventually eliminate the vein. This relieves the varicose leg pain as well. Once the laser energy has been applied, the fiber is removed and a compression bandage is put on your leg. Walking immediately following the procedure is encouraged, and normal activities can be immediately resumed.

Getting Rid of Spider Veins

The Dornier 940 laser system produces the highly unique 940 nm wavelength, which safely passes through the skin and is selectively absorbed by the targeted blood vessel. The vein will gradually disappear, leaving the skin intact.

Men, women and even children, including light- and dark-pigmented individuals, can be successfully treated. Your skin is cooled with ice or a cold compress (in some cases a topical anesthesia) to minimize the mild heat sensation. The length and number of procedures vary, depending on your particular circumstance, but usually last between 15 and 30 minutes each and are normally done in one, two or three appointments.

Side effects are uncommon and usually minimal. Patients often experience a slight redness following treatment - but this goes away within a few days. Your doctor will clearly explain what to expect and provide detailed instructions for you following treatment.

I'm Interested - What next?

Before you laser procedure, a private consultation with your physician is necessary. Your physician will determine if treatment using the D940 laser system is right for you, recommend a detailed plan, answer any of your questions and discuss involved costs and possible insurance reimbursement.

Laser removal of leg veins with Lyra Nd: YAG Laser & Dornier 940 n.m.

Have you been covering your legs with opaque pantyhose? Have you been avoiding wearing short skirts or shorts in the summer time?

Is it because your legs have recently developed a network of red or blue or purple veins that make your legs look unattractive?

We have a solution for you!!

Now the revolutionary new laser treatment with either the Lyra 1064 or Dornier 940 laser system can quickly and safely eliminate these vessels leaving your skin looking smooth and your legs beautiful again. And best of all, Lyra provides the most risk free treatment for dark or tanned skin than any other existing modalites.

How does the Lyra work?

The Lyra laser produces 1064nm wavelength. While the rest of the skin is almost completely transparent for this wavelength, it is highly absorbed in blood. Thus, the laser beam passes through the skin and penetrates the targeted vessel. The laser energy heats up and coagulates blood inside the vessel. Unsupported, vessel walls collapse and seal. These vessels later dissolve within the body.

The laser energy is delivered through a hand-held device with a cooling tip. The cooling tip provides additional safety and comfort during the treatment by lowering the thermal effect on your skin surface.

What can I expect during the treatment?

You will experience a stinging burning sensation during the treatment, which resolves immediately after the treatment is over.

What should I expect after the procedure?

The appearance of the treated vessels will dramatically change turning from blue and purple into light red. Some of the vessels may bulge, however, any inflammation will disappear within a couple of hours. The redness of the treated vessels will gradually disappear as the healing process occurs, which may take anywhere between 2 and 6 weeks depending on the severity of the veins.

The post-operative treatment regime will include wearing support hose, avoiding medication containing aspirin and wearing sunscreen. Make sure to discuss these options with your laser practitioner prior to the treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

Depending on the severity of the veins, you may require multiple treatments four-six weeks apart. The treatment is performed on the existing vessels, diminishing or completely eliminating their appearance. However, the development of new veins cannot be prevented. If your body tends to develop vascular problems, you will most likely come back for additional treatments.
